Skype launch client in selected markets

Skype, a VoIP company based in Luxembourg, has released a Java-based application for mobile phones to users in selected markets, namely Estonia, Finland, Poland, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Denmark, Sweden and the UK. It includes features such as Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls.

Two Uzbek cellcos sued

Uzbek State Committee for Demonopolisation, Supporting Competition and Entrepreneurship (antimonopoly committee) fined two mobile operators last week, the Uzbek-Scandinavian Coscom joint venture was fined for about USD 1,108 for violating the law on advertising, and the Uzbek-US Rubicon Wireless Communications, which offers CDMA services under the Perfectum Mobile brand, for USD 1,582.

GSM-K pledges USD 264 million in investment

Kazakhstan’s largest cellco by subscribers GSM Kazakhstan (GSM-K) says it plans to invest USD 264 million this year, up from USD 223 million in 2007, as it pushes ahead with the expansion of its network.

Telenor results slightly below expectations

TP Group show 31.5 percent rise in profits

Profits at Poland’s TP Group showed a rise that was beyond expectations in the first quarter, rising by 31.5 percent year-on-year to PLN 681 million, helped by a 2 percent increase in sales to PLN 4.53 billion.

Sitronics to deliver DSTK to MTS

MTS Belarus has contracted Sitronics Smart Technologies, in conjunction with Sicap and Giesecke & Devrient, to deliver a DSTK (Dynamic Sim ToolKit) which will enable MTS subscribers to manage a dynamic STK-menu, through which they gain access to a variety of information and entertainment services on the mobile phone.

Belarus announces 170,000 broadband users

Nikolai Pantelei, Belerus’s Minister of Communications and Informatisation, says his country now has 170,000 broadband Internet users,  which is a penetration rate of 6.3 percent, out of a total of 2.7 million Internet users in the Republic overall.
