Russian cellco Vimpelcom’s Kazakh subsidiary KaR-Tel has signed a management agreement with Sky Mobile in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan. Sky offers GSM services under the banner Bitel and was Kyrgyzstan’s leading cellco by subscribers at the end of 2007 with 1.13 million customers and a 60 percent market share.
Russian cellco Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) is apparently discussing the acquisition of a majority stake in Tajikistan’s largest cellco by subscribers, Babilon.
Proxim Wireless has provided its Tsunami radio equipment to MSS Povolzhie, an ISP and subsidiary of Russian cellco MegaFon, which shall be used to rollout of a wireless broadband network to cover a population of over 32 million in a 2,500 square kilometre region.
Bulgarian Telephone Company (BTC) has announced the launch of a cut-price VoIP service, offering free calls within Bulgaria and international calls at half-price. BTC ADSL Voice costs BGL 8.90 (USD 7.2) per month (in addition to an ADSL package from the telco) and includes 3,600 minutes of national phone calls each month.
Telekom Slovenije own cellco Ipko claims to have reached 250,000 since its launch four months ago. Ipko operates a network of 150 base stations with coverage of 76 percent of the population and 52 percent of the territory.
Mobile Telephony of Serbia, Alcatel-Lucent and RIM have announced the launch of BlackBerry services in Serbia. At launch, they will offer customers either the BlackBerry Pearl 8100, the BlackBerry Curve 8300 or the BlackBerry 8800, as well as service on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Service.
